Reading Non-Fiction Using a Template For Note Taking

One of my favorite adult learning, leadership, and brain research books is Brain Rules by Dr. John Medina. This is must reading for leaders who want their communication to stick. Dr. Medina tells us that if you want your brain to remember well, especially if you are reading, you must engage as many of the senses as possible.

I have been in the habit for years of making specific notes in non-fiction books as I read them. This helps my brain to stay engaged with the writer, ask questions, summarize, create next action items, and even identify presuppositions and ideas I disagree with.

My long time Virtual Mentor, Michael Hyatt, recently posted a simple template designed to be used for taking notes while reading non-fiction books. Whether you use Evernote, Word, Pages, Workflowy or even, paper, this InSIGHT template with greatly enhance your non-fiction reading. This template will guide you in tracking 8 elements as you read. You can get a free download of the template of your choice at Michael Hyatt's website here: https://michaelhyatt.com/maximize-non-fiction.html

Using this template enables you to engage many more sensory inputs than just visually reading words, which will lead to much, much higher retention of what's important to remember.

Start 2017 with a Plan For Your Life

If you aim at nothing, that's what you will hit. And if your life is full of clutter and piles it is difficult to take focused aim on what's important.

To help you design a plan for your life for 2017, and get your life organized, I recommend two books that are free audiobook downloads until Jan. 31.

My go to book for life planning and refocusing your life is Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want by Michael Hyatt & Daniel Harkavy. Here is the free audiobook download link, which is good until January 31: http://christianaudio.com/free/

The other free audiobook download is the national bestseller: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo. This is more about organizing and decluttering your personal space, but it is amazing, when you have a clean and clear work space, how much easier it is to do the creative and important work of life planning. Here is the free audiobook download link, which is good until January 31:  http://www.audible.com/promo/offer/2761/ref=a_at_redeem_pc_redeem_2761?p=TIDYUP1&bp_o=true&source_code=SAHFPEM121616002R&ipRedirectOverride=true

The Danger of Following (only) Your Passion

I have shared a maxim in my workshops and coaching for years: The marketplace doesn't pay for passion, it pays for talent.

Whether I am coaching a college student trying to find a major that "fits", or a Baby Boomer on finding their "dream job", it never ceases to capture my attention how deeply THE myth has captured the minds of so many. The myth: follow your passion, and the money will follow. Actually, passion can help you think about "where" to focus your time, money and energy, but it doesn't answer the "what" you will do when you get around your passion. The "what" is your core talents and strengths. Identify your innate talents and develop those talents with discipline and focus. Then, if you are able, use those developed talents in an area of passion.

Watch as Mike Rowe, host of Dirty Jobs, gives his take on the danger of following your passion.

Pete Carroll on Building a Culture of “Grit”

For you Seahawks fans (and non-Seahawks fans) here is an enlightening discussion between Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll, and author/researcher Angela Duckworth about creating a culture of "grit."

Duckworth is known for her research on "grit" and connected with Pete Carroll early on in his Seahawks' career. This also provides some alternative insights for assessing and recruiting people and talent to your organization.

Bono & Eugene Peterson | THE PSALMS

Grab a cup of coffee, find a comfortable chair, and take 20+ minutes to enjoy this honest, creative, inspiring dialogue between two of my favorite artist-authors, Bono and Eugene Peterson. If you have been energized by the music of U2 or have been spiritually invigorated by reading Eugene Peterson's translation of the Bible, The Message, you will savor the interaction between these two as they discuss the influence and impact of the Psalms on their lives. Enjoy.
